Microplastic Mitigation

GHYCF helped fund UMASS Boston Nantucket Field Station’s project to expand local residents’ knowledge and understanding of microplastic pollution on Nantucket Island and how to mitigate microplastic input to Nantucket waterways.

UMASS is creating a summer camp activity for students to examine how and if rain gardens or bioswales can be used to mitigate microplastic pollution. They will be conducting a research project to extend this summer camp activity and determine how and if the rain gardens work to remove microplastics over the course of one to two years with a goal of understanding how to best design and manage rain gardens for microplastic mitigation. A public survey will take place to learn about public knowledge gaps on plastic pollution and to learn what the public’s ideas are on how to best reduce microplastic pollution on Nantucket.
